The History of Village Ministries

Village Ministries was established in 2002 by Pastor Eric Sumo. While he was working with Gospel Recordings in Liberia they were sharing the Gospel through the Jesus Film in the languages of the people and training the Pastors and Church leaders. Pastor Sumo could see many unmet needs of the villagers and was inspired by God to establish an organization that would serve as a channel to meet the spiritual and humanitarian needs of Liberians in many small villages. Villagers hungry for the gospel were accepting Christ and being baptized. It was under these circumstances that Village Ministries was established.

Village Ministries has also worked with the Campus Crusade Team in Liberia showing the Jesus Film in many communities and with the Gospel Recordings Team showing the Jesus Film in the Kpelle and English languages in four communities.

In 2006 Helen Fletcher, a mercy ship volunteer nurse, joined  Pastor Eric to help develop the ministry further and began fundraising in Canada.  In 2007 we opened the  first Vocational School for women and a sub-office in Brewerville, east of Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia. The Head Office was established in Victoria, B.C. Canada by the International Coordinator, Helen Fletcher and now operates under the Canadian name of Liberia Christian Outreach Society, an Incorporated, non-profit society. International Christian Missions Society (icmsgo.com) now writes the tax receipts for Canadian and American donors and Village Ministries is now an associate member of the 4 C's. In 2008 30 women graduated from 9 months of Tailoring and Batik plus 2 months of health teaching from Helen. In 2009 405 students graduated from various vocations in 3 different schools. See Newsletters June '09 and onwards for the progress to date.

The central purpose of Vilage Ministries is:

"To lead villagers to know the Lord, to firstly love God above all things and love their neighbour as themselves. and secondly to provide ways for Liberians to reduce their poverty, mainly through Vocational School Training. "

Verse of the Day
